About the Artist

Penelope Stewart is an artist working across the varied media of printmaking, works on paper, sculpture, photography and architectural interventions/installations. Central to her practice is an engagement with space and place; its architecture, history, politics, ideology and environment.

Stewart received an MFA from the State University of New York, and in 2010 she was elected to the Royal Canadian Academy of the Arts (RCA). Solo exhibitions of Stewart’s work have been exhibited at such notable institutions as The Koffler Centre for the Arts, Toronto 2014; The Albright-Knox Art Gallery, Buffalo, New York 2010; Ganna Walska Lotusland, Santa Barbara, California 2013; Musée d'Art de Joliette, Québec 2012; Musée Barthétè, Boussan, France 2007; Oakville Galleries, Ontario 2011; Tom Thomson Art Gallery, Ontario 2012; ACT Design Museum Canberra, Australia 2012; Poimena Gallery, Launceston, Tasmania, Australia 2012. In 2015 Stewart created a site installation at Zion Schoolhouse, build…build better as part of an initiative of the Toronto Arts Councils Animating Historic Sites program followed by a three part project for Dawson College which will carry through 2016.
